Core Services

Centers for Independent Living provide five core services designed to empower individuals with disabilities and support those in recovery to live independently

The Independent Living Program

Centers for Independent Living (CILs) are community-based, cross-disability, non-profit organizations that are designed and operated by people with disabilities. CILs are unique in that they operate according to a strict philosophy of consumer control, wherein people with all types of disabilities directly govern and staff the organization.

For individuals in recovery from addiction or mental health challenges, CILs provide valuable support services that complement treatment and help build the foundation for long-term independent living and sustained recovery.

CIL Core Philosophy:

  • Consumer control and self-determination
  • Cross-disability approach serving all types of disabilities
  • Community-based and locally responsive
  • Peer support and lived experience as foundation
