Frequently Asked Questions About 12-Step in New Jersey
Can I attend 12-step meetings if I am also on medication-assisted treatment?
Yes. AA and NA do not prohibit members from taking prescribed medication for mental or physical health, including MAT. The NA pamphlet "In Times of Illness" specifically clarifies this. New Jersey groups often welcome MAT patients as full members.
What happens at a typical 12-step meeting in New Jersey?
A typical meeting lasts one hour and includes readings from the fellowship’s literature, a speaker sharing their recovery experience, or a group discussion. Most New Jersey meetings close with the Serenity Prayer or similar. First-timers are invited — not required — to introduce themselves.
Can my sponsor demand I stop MAT or other prescribed medications?
No. A sponsor’s role is guidance, not medical management. AA and NA fellowship literature ("The AA Member — Medications and Other Drugs," NA’s "In Times of Illness") explicitly affirms that sponsors do not intervene in medical care. Find a different sponsor if this happens.
Is 12-step more effective than medication?
For opioid use disorder, medication-assisted treatment is the evidence-based gold standard — 12-step alone is not a substitute. For alcohol use disorder, 12-step is comparable to MAT in effectiveness. Combining 12-step with MAT produces the best outcomes.
Can I be Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist and work the 12 steps?
Yes. Many New Jersey members of all faith traditions work 12-step successfully. The program does not specify any deity; members shape the "higher power" concept in terms consistent with their religious or philosophical beliefs.
What if I see my employer, doctor, or lawyer at a meeting?
You both agree to confidentiality by being in the room. New Jersey members respect anonymity across professional roles; no one will discuss your presence outside. Attending meetings together often builds mutual trust rather than awkwardness.
Will my MAT clinic encourage 12-step attendance?
Most New Jersey MAT clinics offer 12-step referrals as part of the biopsychosocial treatment plan. Clinicians support both the medication and fellowship engagement. SMART Recovery and other peer groups are typically also offered as alternatives.
Do 12-step programs receive government funding?
No. 12-step fellowships are not funded by government, corporations, or institutions — per Tradition 7 they are fully self-supported through voluntary member contributions. This independence is a founding principle of the model.
Can I sponsor someone over video?
Yes. Long-distance sponsorship by phone and video is common and effective. Many New Jersey members sponsor across states or even countries; video adds a personal dimension but is not required. Phone calls and text check-ins work equally well.
How do I find my first 12-step meeting in New Jersey?
Use aa.org or na.org meeting finders, search "New Jersey 12-step meeting finder," call SAMHSA at 1-800-662-4357, or browse New Jersey area service websites. Newark and other urban areas have meetings within walking distance of most residential zip codes.
