Frequently Asked Questions About 12-Step in Oregon
Do I have to be sober to attend my first 12-step meeting?
No. AA and NA welcome newcomers who are still using; the only requirement is a desire to stop. Members are simply asked not to attend intoxicated to the point of disruption. Oregon meetings have greeters who help newcomers feel welcome.
Do I have to speak or share at a 12-step meeting?
No. You can attend as many meetings as you want without saying anything beyond your first name. Sharing (also called "qualifying") is voluntary. Oregon newcomers often listen for weeks before speaking; members respect silent attendance.
Can I change sponsors in Oregon?
Yes. You can change sponsors at any time for any reason — sponsor-sponsee fit is personal. Finding the right sponsor sometimes takes a few tries. Oregon meetings are full of members available for sponsorship; ask again and again until you find a good match.
Does 12-step work for drug addiction as well as alcohol?
Yes. Narcotics Anonymous (NA) applies the 12-step framework to drug addiction. Research evidence for NA is thinner than for AA, but available studies suggest similar benefits. Oregon recovery communities typically include both AA and NA options.
Can atheists or agnostics attend 12-step programs in Oregon?
Yes. Many Oregon 12-step members do not believe in God. The "higher power of your understanding" can be anything greater than oneself — the group itself, nature, love, or reason. Agnostic/atheist-friendly meetings labeled "We Agnostics" or "Secular AA" exist in Oregon metros.
What happens if I see someone famous at a 12-step meeting in Oregon?
Treat them like any other member — first name only, no special attention, no disclosure outside. Celebrities rely on anonymity for effective recovery. Oregon Portland and other metros have many prominent people in recovery who attend anonymously.
Can I count recovery time differently in 12-step if I’m on MAT?
Tradition-based groups typically count recovery days from the last illicit substance use, regardless of MAT status. MARA groups count recovery inclusive of prescribed MAT. Oregon members should discuss counting conventions with their sponsor and group.
Does insurance cover 12-step programs?
Insurance typically does not directly pay for 12-step meetings because they are free and peer-led. Insurance does cover formal treatment that may incorporate 12-step facilitation therapy delivered by a licensed clinician. These are different services.
Can I attend 12-step meetings online from Oregon?
Yes. Thousands of AA and NA meetings are online 24/7 worldwide, including many hosted from or serving Oregon. Virtual meetings follow the same structure as in-person and have become a permanent part of the fellowship landscape.
What if I can’t find a 12-step meeting in rural Oregon?
Online meetings fill the gap — thousands are available 24/7. Hybrid meetings in Portland or other Oregon metros let rural residents join by video. SAMHSA’s 24/7 helpline (1-800-662-4357) also provides live referral support.
