Frequently Asked Questions About 12-Step in Indiana
Do I have to be sober to attend my first 12-step meeting?
No. AA and NA welcome newcomers who are still using; the only requirement is a desire to stop. Members are simply asked not to attend intoxicated to the point of disruption. Indiana meetings have greeters who help newcomers feel welcome.
Do I have to speak or share at a 12-step meeting?
No. You can attend as many meetings as you want without saying anything beyond your first name. Sharing (also called "qualifying") is voluntary. Indiana newcomers often listen for weeks before speaking; members respect silent attendance.
When should I become a sponsor myself?
Tradition suggests one year of continuous recovery and having worked through all 12 Steps yourself. Being a sponsor deepens your own recovery — "you cannot keep what you have unless you give it away" is a core 12-step principle. Indiana groups welcome new sponsors once ready.
Does 12-step work for drug addiction as well as alcohol?
Yes. Narcotics Anonymous (NA) applies the 12-step framework to drug addiction. Research evidence for NA is thinner than for AA, but available studies suggest similar benefits. Indiana recovery communities typically include both AA and NA options.
What are "secular AA" meetings?
Secular AA meetings use alternative readings that omit religious content while keeping the 12-step structure. They often close with the Responsibility Declaration or a secular version of the Serenity Prayer. Indiana secular meetings are commonly found in Indianapolis and other larger cities.
Can I talk about my own 12-step membership publicly?
Yes — you can speak about your personal recovery. Tradition 11 advises against using your last name or photo when identifying as an AA or NA member in public media, to protect the fellowship as a whole. The choice is yours for personal disclosure.
Can I count recovery time differently in 12-step if I’m on MAT?
Tradition-based groups typically count recovery days from the last illicit substance use, regardless of MAT status. MARA groups count recovery inclusive of prescribed MAT. Indiana members should discuss counting conventions with their sponsor and group.
How much does 12-step cost in Indiana?
Nothing. 12-step fellowships are free. Members make voluntary "7th Tradition" contributions ($1–$5 per meeting is typical) to cover rent and refreshments — but contributions are voluntary and no one is refused for not paying.
What platforms do online 12-step meetings use?
Zoom is the most common platform for online AA and NA meetings; some use Google Meet, Discord, or phone bridges. Links are posted at intergroup websites. Indiana groups share meeting IDs openly and do not require pre-registration in most cases.
What if 12-step isn’t a fit for me in Indiana?
That’s okay. SMART Recovery, Women for Sobriety, Refuge Recovery, and LifeRing are evidence-based alternatives available in Indiana both in-person and online. Recovery paths are individual — the key is finding sustained community and structure that works for you.
