Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP)
HIP covers all three FDA-approved MAT medications, including long-acting injectables; counseling is covered when delivered by a licensed addiction provider.
State regulations
Indiana caps the number of OTPs through the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA); new OTPs must demonstrate unmet need before licensure.

Frequently Asked Questions About MAT in Indiana
Can I start mat while I am on probation or parole in Indiana?
Yes. Federal guidance and Indiana law protect your right to continue FDA-approved MAT while under community supervision. Share your probation-officer contact with the clinic so they can document treatment — probation cannot legally require you to stop mat.
Can I get free mat treatment in Indiana?
Free mat treatment is possible in Indiana for patients who qualify for Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), are enrolled in State Opioid Response–funded clinics, or use charity-care programs at community behavioral-health centers. Call 988 or 1-800-662-4357 for live referrals.
Does Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) cover long-acting buprenorphine (Sublocade) or naltrexone (Vivitrol)?
Yes. Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) covers Sublocade and Vivitrol as part of the MAT benefit; most plans require prior authorization documenting prior MAT adherence. Billing is handled by the Indiana provider as a medical (not pharmacy) benefit.
Does COBRA cover mat in Indiana?
Yes. COBRA continues your former employer’s health plan unchanged for up to 18 months, including MAT benefits. The monthly COBRA premium is higher than a marketplace plan for most people; explore Marketplace options too before the 60-day COBRA deadline.
Was the DEA X-waiver requirement for buprenorphine removed in Indiana?
Yes — federal Congress eliminated the X-waiver in December 2022, so any Indiana clinician with a DEA registration can now prescribe buprenorphine for OUD. Continuing-education requirements apply; training is free through Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS) and SAMHSA.
Does length of treatment with mat affect outcomes?
Yes. Meta-analyses consistently find that patients who remain on MAT longer than 12 months have lower rates of relapse, infectious disease, and overdose death. Indiana Medicaid-funded programs report improved retention with long-acting injectables compared to sublingual treatment.
Can I start mat while I’m still using opioids?
For methadone and buprenorphine, continued opioid use at entry is expected — the medication is designed to stop use safely. For naltrexone, 7–14 opioid-free days are required first. Your Indiana clinician will confirm the correct induction strategy at intake.
Will I feel high or sedated after the first mat dose?
Most patients feel calm relief of withdrawal rather than euphoria. Mild drowsiness is common the first day; avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how you react. Severe sedation is rare and warrants a call to the Indiana clinic.
Can mat affect my heart?
Methadone can prolong the QTc interval on ECG; Indiana clinics screen patients with baseline and follow-up ECGs. Buprenorphine and naltrexone do not carry this risk. Patients with cardiac disease can safely use MAT under close cardiology and MAT-team coordination.
Will pediatricians in Indiana know how to care for my MAT-exposed baby?
Yes. Indiana pediatricians and neonatologists receive training on caring for infants with prenatal opioid exposure. Eat, Sleep, Console protocols, parental involvement, and compassionate postpartum care are standard. Share your MAT history openly so the team can tailor monitoring.
Will my counseling sessions be confidential?
Yes — counseling records are protected by 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA. The counselor cannot disclose your MAT status or session content to family, employer, or law enforcement without your specific written consent or a narrowly tailored court order.
Can I travel internationally with mat from Indiana?
Yes, with proper documentation. Bring a letter from your Indiana MAT prescriber, medication in its original pharmacy container, and check destination-country rules — some countries restrict methadone and buprenorphine. The International Narcotics Control Board maintains destination-country guidance.
