Frequently Asked Questions About MAT in Texas
Do I have to stop using opioids before starting mat?
For methadone and buprenorphine, continued opioid use during induction is common and expected; the medication itself helps stop use. For naltrexone, however, you must complete a 7–14 day opioid-free period first. Your Texas clinician will tailor the induction based on your medication.
What is the cheapest way to get mat in Texas?
For most Texas residents, Texas Medicaid is the lowest-cost option — co-pays are usually $0–$3. Without Medicaid, federally qualified health centers with sliding-scale fees are next cheapest, followed by State Opioid Response–funded clinics.
Can I keep the same mat provider when I switch Texas Medicaid plans?
Usually yes, if your provider is in-network with the new plan. Texas MAT clinics typically contract with all major Texas Medicaid managed-care organizations. Verify the provider’s network status before the effective date of your new plan to avoid interruption.
Will my private insurance cover mat treatment in Texas?
Yes — under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and the Affordable Care Act, marketplace and employer health plans must cover MAT for OUD, including mat. Specific cost-sharing (copay, coinsurance, deductible) depends on your plan tier.
Are there license caps or certificate-of-need rules for new MAT programs in Texas?
Texas applies state-specific licensure review for new OTPs; some states also require a certificate-of-need demonstrating unmet demand. Existing buprenorphine prescribers do not face these caps — only methadone OTPs are subject to location-specific licensure review.
Can I go back on mat after stopping?
Yes. Returning to mat after a gap in care is common and safe; your Texas clinic will re-induct using the same protocols as first-time patients. The federal 1-year waiting period sometimes referenced for methadone does not apply to re-admission.
What if I’m in withdrawal right now — where do I go in Texas?
Go to the nearest emergency department; Texas hospitals are equipped to initiate buprenorphine and connect you to outpatient MAT. You can also call 988 for a live counselor to locate an open bridge clinic or mobile MAT unit.
Is the first mat visit confidential?
Yes. Records are protected by 42 CFR Part 2, which is stricter than HIPAA. Your employer, family, or law enforcement cannot access your records without your specific written consent or a narrowly tailored court order. Confidentiality applies from the first visit onward.
Is constipation on mat a serious problem?
Constipation is one of the most common and persistent mat side effects. Daily fluids, fiber, stool softeners, and an over-the-counter laxative like polyethylene glycol are first-line. If severe, your Texas clinician may prescribe a peripherally acting opioid-receptor antagonist.
Does Texas have perinatal-MAT programs?
Yes. Most Texas regions have perinatal-addiction programs coordinating OB care, MAT, and social support. Call 988 or SAMHSA 1-800-662-4357 for Texas-specific referral. Houston-area hospitals typically have dedicated perinatal-addiction coordinators.
Do I have to attend 12-step meetings along with mat?
No. Attending 12-step programs is optional; SMART Recovery, Women for Sobriety, Refuge Recovery, and secular support groups are all acceptable alternatives. Texas MAT clinicians can help you match with a peer group aligned to your values.
Can I use a pseudonym for my mat treatment in Texas?
No — medical records must use your legal name for billing, insurance, and DEA compliance. However, 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality means that legal name is protected from disclosure. Pseudonymous treatment is not available in MAT.
